Mahmood Weighs Options Ahead of T20 Series Against Kiwis
The Green Shirts are set to face the Kiwis in their first T20I match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium tomorrow.
Pakistan's head coach Azhar Mahmood has hinted at the possibility of resting captain Babar Azam for some matches in the upcoming Twenty20 International series against New Zealand, emphasizing the importance of managing player workload and nurturing young talent in preparation for the T20 World Cup.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the series, Mahmood stated,
"We could definitely rest Babar, but it depends on the situation, anyone can be rested."
He highlighted the significance of utilizing the series against New Zealand, Ireland, and England to identify the best team combination for the upcoming T20 World Cup, emphasizing the need for clarity in player roles and the exploration of bench strength.
“In this time ahead of the World Cup, we are looking to create a structure, a game plan and give players clarity in their roles, which always help with improvement.”
“We have a lot of young talent in the squad and we have to see them, to identify our bench strength. We will try to make use of it, the aim is to field the best XI when we play our first T20 World Cup game on June 6.”

Mahmood also discussed the team's batting lineup and options for opening slots, stressing the adaptability required in the dynamic T20 format. With the return of veteran players Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, Mahmood expressed satisfaction with the squad's balance and versatility, noting the formidable challenge posed by New Zealand despite the absence of some key players.
Echoing Mahmood's sentiments, New Zealand batter Mark Chapman acknowledged the talent and excitement within the Kiwi squad, emphasizing the opportunity for emerging players to display their skills in the series against Pakistan.
The 29-year-old said his team-mates were wary of Pakistan’s pace battery, which now includes Amir, and they were “aware about skills he possesses”.
