Pakistan Hockey squad to figure in FIH Pro League III

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has decided to participate in the FIH Pro League III to be played in late 2021.

The Pakistan hockey team have been knocking on the door of success in recent years as they have rediscovered winning ways after decades in the wildness. At the Asian Games in 2014 they took silver, and followed that with a third back to back gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games. Third in the 2017 Asia Cup was followed by a gold medal at the 2018 Asia Champions Trophy. The sparks of a revival are there, but the glory days of the 1970s and 80s actually escapes them.

However, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has decided to participate in the FIH Pro League III to be played in late 2021. Pakistan missed the first two editions because of budgetary constraints.

For Pakistan men, the FIH Pro League offers an opportunity for one of the countries with the extravagant hockey-playing traditions a chance to get back among the world leaders in the game.

The recent meeting between COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa and PHF President Brigadier (r) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar also helped the federation make renewed efforts in uplifting Pakistan hockey.

“We have decided to figure in the FIH Pro League III as without playing in the tournament, competing against the world’s best teams will turn into a troublesome proposition,” a PHF official told ‘The News’.
