The apex cricket body has clarified no decision has been taken regarding the fate of the tournament despite stories circulating in the media declaring that this year's event would be moved to 2022.
The ICC board will have an important meeting on Thursday where several issues relating to the resumption of international cricket will be discussed while contingency plans will also be explored in the context of the competition.
“The ICC has not taken a decision to postpone the T20 World Cup and preparations are ongoing for the event in Australia this year as per plan,” a spokesman for the ICC was quoted as saying by Reuters.
“This is on the agenda for the ICC Board meeting tomorrow and a decision will be taken in due course.”
Australia has been largely successful in curbing the spread of the novel coronavirus as certain restrictions are being gradually eased in the country. However, the ban on foreign travel continues to pose challenges to World Cup organisers whereas there is the added pressure of creating bio-secure bubbles for 16 participating squads.
The developments surrounding the T20 World Cup are being keenly watched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which might be eager to stage the Indian Premier League if the global event is postponed.
The eight-franchise tournament risks the possibility of being cancelled this year that could cause a major loss of revenue to the BCCI.
The Indian cricket board will thus mull over holding the IPL in place of a delayed T20 World Cup – an idea that has received the backing of Australian pacer Pat Cummins.
