Well aware of the financial crunch and tough target ahead in the shape of Olympic qualifiers, Pakistan’s premier weightlifter Talha Talib is determined to press for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics seat.
Pakistan’s greenhorn weightlifter, Talha Talib who recently became the first Pakistani to top his group table with making 2 new records on National level in the 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China; is dead set on qualifying for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics to which he said,
“Olympics 2020 is my target. I have to feature in at least six qualifying events. I have played in two and there are four left."
He 19-year-old, Talha said he knows that grabbing an Olympics seat is a tough task but he is determined to do his best to accomplish that. Gujranwala-born Talha, last year stood the gold medalist in 136 KG alongside snatching two silver medals in clean and jerk 155 KG and 291 KG in the 67 KG competition of the 5th International Solidarity Championship in Egypt.
Talib also is a bronze medalist of 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games bronze while earlier in the 2018 Asian Games, he took the 7th spot with 287 KG (133 KG snatch, 154 KG clean and jerk) in the 62 KG competition.
Egypt and Ningbo events were Olympic qualifiers in which Talha has performed well and is trying to improve his skill set in both snatch, in which he already is talented enough, and clean and jerk as well.
As much as Talha is intended to feature in the upcoming Olympics 2020, he expressed his sorrow as he is not being backed by the government which is proving to be real tough to progress any further.
“Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF) is trying its best to field us in Olympic qualifiers but it is not that easy because of financial issues. The government will have to contribute,” said Talha.
He has been treated by his former school management fairly as it has provided him with facilities for training on the school premises in Gujranwala until Olympics to which the weightlifter expressed his gratitude saying,
“I am thankful to my school (The School) where I spent some precious years of my life. It has given me space for training at a time when the government is not backing any training camp.
