Pakistani Pro Judoka, Shah Hussain to compete in Brasilia Grand Slam 2019

Japan based Pakistani Judoka, Shah Hussain would be featuring in the upcoming Brasilia Grand Slam 2019 for his Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifying race, which is set to begin on 4th October in Brazil.

The only Olympic hope for Pakistan by Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF), Shah Hussain will feature in the upcoming Brasilia Grand Slam 2019 alongside other several judo events which are qualifying rounds for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 

Pakistan by Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF) has planned a series of events for Shah Hussain, who competes in -100 KG category, during the next three months that would help hi prove his Olympic Rankings by taking up more points to his tally.  

There would be a total of six events in which Shah would be taking part which are stated below:

1. Brasilia Grand Slam (October 04 to 09)

2. Grand Slam (UAE, Oct 23 to 28)

3. Oceania Open (Australia, November 02 to 06)

4. Grand Slam (Japan, November 21 to 25)

5. Asian Open (Hong Kong, November 29 to December 02) and

6. Qingdao Open (December 11 to 15).

The judo Olympic qualifying period, which commenced on May 25, 2018 would end on May 25, 2020. Various international judo events contribute towards accumulation of ranking points and top athletes will be selected in May 2020.

PJF Vice President, Masood Ahmed informed that according to International Judo Federation rules, if a judoka gets 54th Olympic ranking position he would be able to earn a spot for prestigious event on continental quota and Shah is just three points behind that target.
“We are sure he will reach that level in the very first event he competes in. However, he will have to maintain that position till the end of Olympic qualifiers. Hence, his participation in different events is imperative."
Shah's international ranking have risen from 26 places to 73rd where he improved up to 94th to 57th position.
