Pakistan win 10 medals at Street Child Games in Rio
Pakistan’s Muhammad Naeem, Mehr Ali and Naseer Ahmed managed a clean sweep at the Street Child Games 100m and 400m athletics sprint in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday.
The teenagers won gold, silver and bronze medals in both events.
According to Azad Foundation officials, Muhammad Naeem clocked 15 seconds to win the gold medal in 100m race, and timed one minute to clinch the 400m title.
The trio hail from impoverished backgrounds of Ibrahim Hyderi and Malir in Karachi. They prepared for inaugural Street Child Games in Karachi and aimed to win medals for the country at the event.
Mehr Ali, who also represented Pakistan at 2014 Street Child World Cup, also won a gold medal in the long jump event, while Muhammad Naeem secured second position and Burundi’s Zouma finished with a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Naseer Ahmed missed out on gold in the 100m hurdles event. Instead, he bagged a silver medal, whereas Mehr Ali finished third with a bronze.
Pakistan have won 10 medals so far in the tournament, which include three gold, four silver and three bronze medals in four events.
The games are featuring athletes from nine countries, i.e. Pakistan, India, Burundi, Egypt, Great Britain, Mozambique, Liberia and The Philippines along with hosts Brazil.
