Pakistan’s star professional boxer Mohammad Waseem undergoes strenuous training
Two-time WBC world silver flyweight champion, Mohammad Waseem of Pakistan is training hard to make his comeback bout an absolute win for him, in Madrid.
The 31 year old boxer from Quetta was to have his comeback bout at the MTK Global Glasgow Centre which was scheduled on 22nd June against John Chuwa of Tanzania. But the fight was called off due to irregularities in transmission of the MRI reports to the British Boxing Board of Control.
Waseem, one of the best boxers produced by Pakistan, was last seen in action in June 2018 when he went down against South African counterpart, Moruti Mthalane in Kuala Lumpur, losing the International Boxing Federation (IBF) world title fight. Since then, Waseem was out of action.
“Although I have yet to return to the ring after my bout in last summer in Kuala Lumpur my focus has been on training, this training is going to be a very important year for me.” Waseem said in an interview.
However, this year is going to be of great importance for Pakistan’s boxing star as he is undergoing strenuous training under MTK Global, a world renowned boxer development company, in Madrid. Waseem has trained in the US, Japan and South Korea, all different environments. In the US, the focus is on speed while in Japan, boxing is a bit slow with focus on techniques.
The purpose of his training in Madrid is to improve his conditioning with a variety of sparring partners in Madrid, who will help him have a new experience of training. Three other boxers and two trainers are also accompanying him to Madrid.
“I am extremely happy that it is going very well. I am super fit for any challenge. But what I want first is to battle for regaining the WBC flyweight world silver title. It’s going to be very important as I need to improve my ranking. If I regained the WBC silver crown I would go to the top and that would help me challenge a world champion, I will not rush though. I will stay calm. It is hundred percent sure that I will play a WBC world silver title fight this year and I am optimistic that I will regain it.” the Quetta born fighter said.
Waseem's current WBC ranking is 11th and his International Boxing Federation (IBF) ranking is 12th. So far he has contested in a total of 9 fights in which he won 8 of them, 6 by knock-outs, losing to only Moruti Mthalane. 2015 was the year when he left the amateur circuit and turned professional having won bronze in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
He clinched the WBC world sliver title in only his 4th bout and just months later defended that. However, most of his short pro career was dogged by financial issues that forced Waseem to stay out of the ring for quite some time.
