The 10-year-old Hamza Roman upset Zahid Khan in the opening match of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tennis Championship Men’s singles which got under way here at Synthetic Tennis Courts of the Qayyum Sports Complex, Peshawar.

Pakistan No. 1 Aqeel Khan and national ranking player Asad Khan are also part of the Championship which would certainly help the upcoming players to learn good things from player like Aqeel Khan. 

In the opening day matches of the Men’s singles 10-year-old Hamza Roman, who is also ranked No. 1 in Under-12 category and second in the Under-14 defeated Zahid Khan by 6-2 and 6-3 in a thrilling match witnessed by capacity crowd present on this occasion. Holding his racket with both hands when he smashed his forehand and backhand shorts in the one hour battle, Hamza really fascinated the sitting spectators with his play.

Former Sports Minister and Vice President Pakistan Olympic Association Syed Aqil Shah was the chief guest who formally inaugurated the Championship. DIG Police Muhammad Salim Marwat, known cardiac specialist Dr. Farhat Abbas, who is also Vice President KP Tennis Association, President KP Tennis Association and well known plastic surgeon Dr. Tahir, Secretary Umar Ayaz, players and spectators were also present. 

Speaking on this occasion, Syed Aqil Shah lauded KP Tennis Association for their untiring efforts in the promotion of Tennis in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He appreciated Dr. Farhat Abbas and Dr. Tahir who dedicated served the players and the game.

When Dr. Tahir Abbas took over as President in his first tenure in 2012, there was only one playing court but now he has succeeded in the construction of more than 10 Tennis courts, four synthetics and much updated Tennis courts in Pakistan Club in Shahi Bagh along with two grassy courts, two Tennis synthetic courts in Qayyum Sports Complex, two tennis courts in Abdul Wali Khan Sports Complex, two courts in Mardan Sports Complex, one Tennis court in Hayatabad Sports Complex were constructed.

Besides, this it was the keen interest taken by Dr. Tahir who made a request to Director General Sports KP Junaid Khan, Secretary Sports, Minister Sports and Chief Minister KP for approving two Tennis courts each to be constructed in every new playing facility, Aqil Shah added.

In his address DIG Muhammad Saleem Marwat appreciated KP Tennis Association for holding tournaments on regular basis. He said through such like events more players would come up to represent KP at national and international levels.

Dr. Tahir on this occasion, disclosed that they are in contact with President Pakistan Tennis Federation Salim Saifullah Khan for the including of Peshawar in any international event. He said despite financial crunch the association is holding tournaments on regular basis. He also thanked DG Sports KP for extending all out support during the events.

He said with holding of tournaments on regular basis now the KP players is holding Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 titles besides playing international events. The Championship, he said, would continue up till March 8, 2019 wherein the players are competing in Boys Under-14, Men singles, Men’s doubles and Men doubles (above 35-years) are eligible to participate.
