Dollar East/Master Paints clinched the Borjan Punjab Polo Cup — the oldest polo competition in the world — as they crushed Army Remounts 8.5-4 in the final at the Lahore Polo Club (LPC) on Sunday.
Both Dollar East/Master Paints and Army Remounts remained unbeaten in the group matches and also won their semi-finals in style to qualify for the final.
Argentina’s Juan Cruz Losada and Hamza Mawaz Khan continued with their impressive form as both struck four goals each for the winning side, while England’s George Meyrick scored two goals and Major Omer Minhas and Major General Isfandiyar Pataudi scored a goal each for Army Remounts.
“It was a good tournament for us and this win will boost our confidence for the National Open starting this week,” Dollar East/Master Paints captain Sufi Farooq told The Express Tribune. “We defeated Army and they are one of the best teams in the circuit. In fact our first match in the National Open will be against Army.”
Farooq, who has brought horses from Argentina, further added that it is the right combination of players and horses that gives his team an edge over the others.
“We’ve got horses from Argentina and the combination of the players is also great,” he added. “Our real test will be the National Open which will have five chukkers instead of four and that will really make a difference as by the end of the week most horses will be stressed.”
Meanwhile in the third-place match, Pedro Zacharias helped Barry’s defeat Master Paints/Habib Metro 6-3 to secure third place in the tournament.
