Unseeded Shamael Chaudhry continued his giant-killing act in the 32nd Federal Cup National Ranking Tennis Championships when he eliminated eighth seed Heera Ashiq to reach the semi-finals at the Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex, Islamabad.
The UK-based Pakistani from Islamabad, who had earlier stunned fourth seed and Davis Cup player Shahzad Khan, won in three sets which were all decided by tie-breakers. He lost the opening set 6-7 (5-7) but bounced back to claim the remaining sets 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).
Top seed Aqeel Khan dropped just a solitary game in his 6-0, 6-1 rout of Yousuf Khalil, but third seed Muzammil Murtaza had to fight hard to defeat promising Mohammad Shoaib 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), while setting up a semi-final clash with Aqeel.
Unseeded Abid Ali Akbar completed the last-four line-up after brushing aside Mudassar Murtaza 6-2 6-3. He will face Shamael.
In the junior under-18 category top seed Mohammad Shoaib, second seed Ahmed Kamil, fourth seed Abdullah Saeed and sixth seed Ahmed Asjad all advanced to the semi-final.
Meanwhile, there was a big upset in the boys’ under-14 event when seventh seed Mohammad Huzaifa Khan shocked top seed Sami Zeb in a three-set thriller.
