Army, WAPDA dominate 49th National Athletics Championships 2018

Army (452 points) strongly defended the men’s events crown with 16 gold, nine silver and 12 bronze while WAPDA (306 points) finished as the runners-up with six gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals in the 49th National Athletics Championships 2018 at Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad.

Army and WAPDA reassured their status as power houses of Pakistan athletics once again as the departments won the men’s and women’s events respectively at the 49th National Athletics Championships which ended here at the Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad. 

Army (452 points) strongly defended the men’s events crown with 16 gold, nine silver and 12 bronze. WAPDA (306 points) finished as the runners-up with six gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals.PAF (76 points) stood third with one gold and four bronze medals.

WAPDA defended the women’s events title with 416 points which they earned by virtue of 14 gold, 13 silver and five bronze medals.Army (258 points) finished second with six gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

Higher Education Commission (HEC, 107 points) ended third with one gold and 11 bronze medals.Abdul Moeed Baloch of Sindh got the silver medal in 400m.

Shehroz Khan of WAPDA set a new national record in high jump as Army and WAPDA won titles of men’s and women’s competitions, respectively.

Chakwal-born Shehroz jumped a distance of 2.07 metre to set a new national record in men’s high jump competitions on the final day.Shafqat Abbas of WAPDA finished second with 1.9m jump, while Azmat of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) clinched the bronze medal, with a 1.93m jump.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) were the third best department at the annual championships, finishing fourth in the men’s events with two medals and ending up third at the women’s event with 12 medals.


Sindh won one silver medal in the men’s events while Railways and Punjab won a bronze medal each in the women’s events.

In men’s marathon Army’s Nadeem Hassan won first position covering the distance in 2:29.53 followed by Wapda’s Mohammad Imran, who covered the said distance in 2:36.11.

In the 1500m men’s event, Army’s Javed Mirza clinched first position clocking 3:59.55 followed by Sohail Amir of Wapda, who covered the distance in 4:00.24.

Army’s Ubaid Ali, M. Shahbaz, Uzair Rehman and Liaqat Ali won gold for their team in 4x100m relay followed by Wapda’s Zegham Gohar, Majid, and Tanveer Abbas.

In women’s 4x100m relay, Wapda’s Sahib-e-Asra, Arooj, Aniqa and Najma won gold for their team while Army’s Hiba, Nabila, Samara and Maria finished second.

In women’s heptathlon event, Nabila Riaz from Army won gold with 3529 points. Wapda’s Attiya Rana won the women’s discus throw event.

Meanwhile, Army’s Akhtar Muneer and Dansih Rashid won gold and silver medals in Decathlon with 6051 and 6010 points respectively.

Army’s Uzair Rehman and Mohammad Shahbaz won gold and silver respectively in the 200m race (21.23 and 21:68 seconds).

Wapda’s Asra and Aniqa won gold and silver respectively in the women’s 200m race clocking 24.76 and 25.73 seconds respectively.

In men’s 4x400m relay, Army’s Mehboob, Mazhar, Waqar and Nadeem won gold while Wapda’s Asad, Fakhar, Sharafat and Waqar ended as the silver medal winners.

The women’s 4x400m relay was clinched by Wapda’s Najma, Asra, Aniqa and Mussarat who clocked 3:47.57 while second position was grabbed by Army’s Maira Maratab, Abida, Maria and Sumra.

The 5000m women’s race was won by Rabia Ashiq of Wapda with in 20:03:99 minutes followed by her team mate Farhat Bano who covered the distance in 20.33.11 minutes.

Wapda’s Sheeroz Khan won the High Jump event while his teammate Shafaqat Abbas and PAF’s Azam finishing second and third.

The women’s long jump event was won by Army’s Maria while Wapda’s Najma Parveen won silver in the event.

Arshad Nadeem, who won bronze at the Asian Games earlier this year, won gold for Wapda while HEC’s Mohammad Yasir won silver in the event.
