Hamza Akbar bests 58th ranked cueist Robbie Williams in Indian Open Qualifiers 2018

Pakistani cueist Hamza Akbar defeated Robbie Williams of England in Indian Open 2018 Qualifiers being held from 15-16th August at Preston Guild Hall, Preston, England.


91st ranked Pakistani snooker player Hamza Akbar who turned professional in 2015 prevailed over better ranked English cueist Robbie Williams in the qualifying event of Indian Open 2018. The qualifiers are being held at Guild Hall, Preston, England from 15-16th August in a best of 7 format.

Hamza Akbar won 4-2 against the seasoned English snooker player, managing a remarkable 135 point break in the decisive 6th frame. Hamza managed to take the lead in the game by winning a low-scoring first frame 59-19. Robbie Williams then fought back with a 78 point break to take the second frame with 94 points to Hamza's 31. The third frame was again a close contest in which Hamza edged Williams, he won the frame 65-34. Hamza kept up the pressure with a 71 point break to win the fourth frame 78-51. Having fell behind early in the game, Robbie Williams made a last ditch effort, his break of 86 led to a win in the fifth frame. Hamza Akbar nipped all chances of a comeback in the sixth frame, scoring a tremendous break of 135 points which is the qualifying event's highest so far, this being the 9th match of the event. The player from Faisalabad was Pakistan’s national champion at the age of just 19 which is a testament to his potential.

Victory in this qualifying event will allow Hamza Akbar to compete in the Indian Open 2018 which is to be held from 18-22 September later this year in Kochi, India. It is the 4th ranking event of the 2018/19 snooker calendar.
