United upsets Sultans, register first victory

Islamabad United shocked entrants and inform Multan Sultans by 5 wickets to open their account in the third edition of HBL-PSL.

Islamabad United started their campaign in the absence of their captain Misbah ul haq, Roman Raees was captaining of Islamabad United. Roman Raees after winning the toss, elected to field first in the overcast conditions of Dubai.

Multan openers came out in the middle to bat but Islamabad seamers Ruman Raees, Mohammad Sami, Steven Finn and Andre Russell get the full use of moisture in the pitch and not only restricted them from posting a big target.

Multan’s top order went back to the dugout without making any impact as Sultans lost four wickets on 31 runs. At that stage skipper Shoaib Malik and all-rounder Pollard contributed 54 runs for the 5th wicket partnership but Pollard’s short cameo came to end as he was bowled by his countryman Andre Russell. Pollard scored 28 of 19 balls with 2 fours and 1 six. With Pollard gone, skipper Shoaib Malik was also sent back by Russell on 35 runs and Sultans innings was wrapped up on 113 runs in 19.5 overs.

Captain Ruman Raees was pick of the bowlers as he got 3 wickets for 14 runs while Mohammad Sami and Andre Russell got 2 and Steven Finn got 1 for United.

In reply, Islamabad managed to get the target of 114 runs in 17.4 overs for the loss of 5 wickets and won the match by 5 wickets. Both the openers were sent packing early as Islamabad lost half of the team on 63 runs. At that stage, United was looking in trouble but resilient Hussain Tallat never gave away along with all-rounder Fahim Ashraf and chase down the score in 17.4 overs as both the batsmen contributed 54 runs to win the match for Islamabad United. It was a big victory for United as they were playing without the experienced captain Misbah ul Haq.

Hussain Tallat scored unbeaten 48 runs while Faheem Ashraf remained not out on 12 runs. Sunsational Imran Tahir picked up 3 wickets including two wickets in 2 balls and marginally missed the hat-trick as Fahim Ashraf somehow managed to survive the hat-trick ball. He made it difficult for Islamabad’s batsmen to chase the score easily while Mohammad Irfan and Juniad Khan Junaid Khan got 1 wicket each. Hussain Tallat for his outstanding batting was given man of the match award.

Islamabad United registered first victory in 2 matches. They will now face Quetta Gladiators on Wednesday at Sharjah cricket stadium.
