WAPDA retain men, women table tennis team titles
WAPDA outplayed Army to win both men and women team events of 54th National Table Tennis championship at Islamia Club, Karachi.
Defending champions WAPDA once again displayed its dominance over the opponents in the game as they defeated Army in both men and women team events of National Table tennis championship to retain the titles.
Former national champion and top seed player Asim Qureshi played crucial role in WAPDA triumphs against Army 3-1 in the men’s team event. Asim won both the matches against Army’s Fawad Khawaja by 8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-2 and Salman Virk by 11-4, 11-8, 11-3. WAPDA's Rameez lost the single match against Army’s Salman by 9-11, 15-13, 9-11, 7-11 but in the last match, Ali Faisal thrashed Faizan Zahoor 11-9, 17-15, 11-6 to win the match and the men’s team title for WAPDA.
WAPDA completed the double crown as women also followed the footsteps of men to carve out Army by 3-0 in the final. Aisaha Sharjeel chalked up straight 11-6, 11-3, 11-9 victory over Army’s Farwa Babar. WAPDA faced fair bit of resistance from Army in the next two matches as Army’s women stretched the battle to the limits. Sadia from WAPDA stormed back after losing the first two sets posted a 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8 victory over Farah Ilyas while in the last encounter, Sanam sent off Seemab Alam by 9-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8.
President Pakistan Table tennis federation S.M Sibtain awarded the winners and runners-up with trophies and medals.
