Pakistan hopeful for good show in Men’s World Team Squash Championship
Pakistan to face Egypt and Switzerland in the group A of WFA’s Men’s World Team Squash Championship to be held in Marseille from November 27 to December 3.
Pakistan 4 men team Farhan Zaman, Shahjahan Khan, Ammad Fareed and Asim Khan along with head coach Faheem Gul and Manager Aftab Qureshi are taking part in the tournament. Total of 24 teams are participating in the event divided in 8 pools. Pakistan is in the toughest pool A along with Switzerland and Egypt.
Head coach Faheem Khan was optimistic for good show in the championship as the players underwent intense training and according to him players have abilities to finish on top in the mega event. He said that one would write off Pakistan chances in the event at their own peril and despite being underdogs his players would put up a fight like champions and would prove the critics wrong.
He said we could not get chance to play too frequently in last many years but our player are talented and trained and they can give tough time to their opponents. According to him Farhan Zaman who had previously played in the World Team Championship in 2013 while all the other players don’t even have the idea, what they are going to face. “I will depend and count on Farhan and Ammad as they have abilities to upset any given opponent”.
Faheem said Secretary Tahir Sultan was also doing a great job and it was because of him that players were going through highly intense and modern day training. “They are young, not as experienced as others but on the other hand, it could be in our favor too as being underdogs there would be no match pressure on them.
It is pertinent to mention here that it is going to 25th edition of World squash Team Championship Title. In 2015 the event was scheduled to be held in Cairo, Egypt but due to security situation the event was postponed later. The event was started in 1967 and Australia claimed its 1st title. Pakistan won its 1st World squash Team Championship Title in 1977 held in Toronto, Canada. Pakistan won its last championship in 1993 held in Karachi. England are the current champions. World Squash Team Championship was twice held in Pakistan. 1st in 1993 in Karachi and In 2005 in Islamabad.
